An agricultural expert from farm insurance specialist Lycetts has called on farmers to make sure they take health and safety seriously or risk huge fines or even a jail sentence.
William McCarter explained that many farmers may not fully understand just how critical a breach could be to their business, amounting to fines of hundreds of pounds, the Dorset Echo reports.
Agriculture is one of several dangerous industries in the UK, with the worst rate of fatal injuries in the workplace of all sectors. In the south-west, for example, there have been seven deaths in the past 12 months alone – which is the highest death rate across Britain.
Mr McCarter commented: “Farmers who are lax with their health and safety procedures can expect to feel the full force of the law. Now a number factors are taken into account when deciding punishment, including the level of culpability, the risk of causing harm and the level of potential harm, and the turnover of the offending business.”
According to the Health and Safety Executive, the agriculture industry has a fatal injury rate around 18 times higher than the all-industry rate – and transport is the biggest killer in the sector. The majority of deaths are caused by overturning vehicles or people being hit by moving vehicles.
As such, you would certainly be wise to have robust emergency response plans and incident response procedures in place for such situations just in case they do arise. If you need any help in this regard, do get in touch with us here at HFR Solutions CIC today.
